IQNA – The Quran presents the philosophy of fasting as a practice of piety or Taqwa. Taqwa is a form of spiritual strength and inner resilience that shields a person from the dangers of desire and external influences.

Fasting is a form of worship found in all divine religions and some non-divine ones, not just exclusive to Islam. For instance, followers of Sabianism fast for thirty days in reverence to the moon. Brahmins and Buddhists have their unique fasting practices, and People of the Book (Jews and Christians) observe their mandatory and recommended fasts, which can last up to 25 days.

The benefits of fasting have been recognized by various tribes and nations for a long time, which is why we see fasting in different rituals and religions.

The Quran speaks about the philosophy of fasting: “Believers, fasting has been made mandatory for you as it was made mandatory for the people before you, so that you may have fear of God” (Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 183). This verse introduces the philosophy of fasting as a means to attain piety or Taqwa. Taqwa represents a person's self-restraint against things that harm him and tarnish his dignity. It's a form of spiritual strength and inner resilience that protects a person from the dangers of desire and external influences.

When someone heeds God's call to abstain from eating, drinking, and sexual activity, they naturally become more obedient in responding to God's call to avoid sins and disobedience. Such a person can easily control their ego and prevent it from pursuing vanity and worthless interests. Such a person possesses high spiritual strength.

In another verse of the Quran, stress has been put on the concept of “patience”: “Believers, help yourselves (in your affairs) through patience and prayer; God is with those who have patience” (Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 153).

In Quranic interpretations, the meaning of patience in this verse is considered to be fasting. This is because fasting is one of the best ways to cultivate patience and endurance in humans. Such patience is needed in all aspects of life, especially during difficulties and challenges.
