IQNA – The police in the Indian state of Jharkhand are investigating an incident of Quran desecration that occurred near a mosque in Jamtara district.

According to reports, some unknown perpetrators burned some pages of the holy book and left them in a field near the Fatehpur Bazar mosque, sparking outrage among the local Muslim community.

Hundreds of people gathered at the scene and demanded justice for the Quran desecration, which they said was aimed at inciting religious tensions ahead of the state elections.

Maulana Zulfikar Nizami, the imam of the mosque, said the incident was a deliberate attempt by anti-social elements to disturb the social harmony and brotherhood in the area.

Alok Kumar, the officer in charge of the local police station, said the police had registered a case and were trying to identify and arrest the suspects.

He said the police had also increased security in the area to prevent any untoward incidents.
