TEHRAN (IQNA) – Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei approved a proposal to pardon or commute prison terms of eligible prisoners sentenced by various courts in Iran.

Ayatollah Khamenei agreed to the request of Judiciary Chief Ayatollah Seyed Ebrahim Raeisi for granting the pardon, according to the website of the Leader’s office.

The clemency will be granted on the occasion of the auspicious Eids in the lunar Hijri month of Rajab, including the birthday anniversary of Imam Ali (AS) and the Mab’ath (appointment of Hazrat Muhammad (PBUH) to the prophethood).

It also comes amid the need for reducing the number of prisoners in the current conditions.

Article 110 of the Constitution grants the Leader the right to pardon or reduce the sentences of convicts upon a recommendation from the head of the Judiciary.

The clemency, however, does not apply to certain types of convicts, including those who have been sentenced for their role in the armed struggle against the country, armed or organized drug trafficking, armed robbery, arms smuggling, abduction, bribery, and embezzlement.
