TEHRAN (IQNA) – Syria’s grand Mufti Sheikh Ahmed Badreddin Hassoun said some so-called Islamic centers in Europe back the Daesh (ISIL or ISIS) terrorist group.

Addressing the Irish Parliament in Dublin earlier this week, he said 80 countries of the world have sent 360,000 terrorists to Syria.

He said Syria has paid a heavy price for countering the terrorists who seek to destroy the country.

Sheikh Hassoun also lauded Iran and Russia for their support for the legitimate government of Syria and the people of the Arab country against terrorists.

He further slammed the media for distorting the realities in Syria and urged European politicians to go to Damascus and see the situation for themselves if they seek peace.

Syria has been gripped by civil war since March 2011 with various terrorist groups, including Daesh, currently controlling parts of it.

According to a report by the Syrian Center for Policy Research, the conflict has claimed the lives of over 470,000 people, injured 1.9 million others, and displaced nearly half of the country’s pre-war population of about 23 million within or beyond its borders.
