TEHRAN (IQNA) – An international campaign has been launched to seek the release of prominent Shia cleric Ayatollah Sheikh Nimr al-Nimr.

According to Al-Alam news network, rallies have been held in different countries starting on Friday in protest to the death sentence handed by Saudi Arabia to Ayatollah Nimr.

Sydney, Australia, Auckland in New Zealand, and Mexico City in Mexico were among the cities hosting the rallies.

In Sydney, the demonstrators handed out leaflets mentioning the severity of the human rights situation in Saudi Arabia.

They also called on Saudi authorities to revoke the death sentence for Sheikh Nimr and immediately release him.

Similar protests were held in Sao Paulo, Brazil, Brussels, Belgium, and Paris, France.

Sheikh Nimr was detained in July 2012 following demonstrations that erupted in Saudi Arabia’s Qatif region.
He was accused of delivering anti-regime speeches and defending political prisoners.

His arrest sparked widespread protests in the Arab country.

A Saudi court later sentenced Sheikh Nimr to death and, in March this year, an appeal court approved the death penalty of the prominent cleric.
