Kyrgyzstan Holding National Quran Contest

TEHRAN (IQNA) – The first edition of nationwide “Spring of Quran” contest is underway in Kyrgyzstan with participation of 27 Quran memorizers.

Speaking to IQNA on Saturday, an official with the contest said that the event was scheduled to be held in 2020 but was postponed due to considerations over the COVID-19 pandemic.

The final stage of the event kicked off on Friday and will wrap up today in the central mosque of Jalal Abad Province, added Mohammedyar Kurban Beikov.

According to him, 27 memorizers of Quran from different provinces are competing in categories of 30, 20, and 10 Juzes (parts).

Awards include $12,000 in cash, two Umrah tickets, and other prizes.

Raising awareness about Quran in the society, encouraging Kyrgyz people towards Quran and its memorizaion, praising the efforts of Quran memorizers, and providing the winners with opportunity to attend international contests are among the aims of the event which is sponsored by Office for Muslims Religious Affairs, Beikov added.

He also said that a host of guests from other countries such as Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Turkey, Yemen, and Egypt have also been invited to the event.

Kyrgyzstan is a landlocked country with mountainous terrain in Central Asia. It is bordered by Kazakhstan to the north, Uzbekistan to the west and southwest, Tajikistan to the southwest and China to the east. Its capital and largest city is Bishkek.

Official sources estimate that 80 percent of the country’s population is Muslim.
