TEHRAN (IQNA) – The Society of Seminary Teachers of Qom condemned the continued detention of senior Nigerian cleric Sheikh Ibrahim Zakzaky, holding the Nigerian government responsible for the health of the Shia cleric.

There have been reports in recent days that Sheikh Zakzaky’s health has further deteriorated and he is in critical condition.

In a statement, the Society of Seminary Teachers of Qom described Abuja’s treatment of the cleric as “barbaric” saying the Nigerian government and army, backed by the US, Zionist regime and Saudi rulers, seek to poison the leader of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN) to add to pressure on Muslims.

The statement also slammed sol-called defenders of human rights for their silence on the issue.

The society condemned the illegal conduct of the Nigerian government, holding it responsible for the health of the top cleric.

Zakzaky has been in detention since December 2015 after his residence in the city of Zaria was raided by Nigeria’s forces, during which he was beaten and lost his left eye.

During the brutal crackdown, three of his sons lost their lives, his wife sustained serious wounds and more than 300 of his followers were killed.

Zakzaky was charged in April 2018 with murder, culpable homicide, unlawful assembly, disruption of public peace and other accusations. He has pleaded not guilty, vehemently rejecting all accusations brought up against him by his country's authorities.
