TEHRAN (IQNA) –  Egypt’s ministry of Awqaf and Islamic affairs said it plans to regulate more than 2600 Quran memorization centers in the country.

According to al-Dastoor news website, Sheikh Jaber Tayi, head of the ministry’s Religious Affairs Department, said the plan will be implemented in cooperation with the ministry of cooperatives.

He said that currently more than 30,000 girls and boys are learning the Quran in the memorization centers.

The Awqaf ministry oversees the courses held in the centers and organizes examinations to assess their efficiency, he said.

According to the official, Quran memorization centers must operate either under the Awqaf ministry or Al-Azhar Islamic Center.

He added that one of the criteria for assessing the activities of Quranic centers is preventing misuse of Quranic courses to promote political agendas.

Egypt is a country in North Africa with a population of around 96 million.

Muslims account for around 90 percent of the country’s total population.

Quranic activities, including memorization of the Holy Book, are very common in the Arab country.
