TEHRAN (IQNA) – With the beginning of the arrival of pilgrims, Arbaeen Quranic booths started their activities in Iraq’s Basra governorate, across the Shalamcheh border crossing in Iran’s southwestern province of Khuzestan.

According to Ali Aboud al-Taei, an official with the plan to set up the booths, six Quranic booths have started their activities in the area.

He said Quranic groups are also present in adjacent governorates like DHi Qar and al-Muthanna.

Over two million Iranians are expected to enter Iraq for Arbaeen pilgrimage in the coming days.

Arbaeen, which is one of the largest religious gatherings in the world, comes 40 days after Ashura, the martyrdom anniversary of the third Shia Imam, Imam Hussein (AS).

Each year, a huge crowd of Shias flock to the Iraqi city of Karbala, where the holy shrine of Imam Hussein (AS) is located, to perform mourning rites.

Iranian pilgrims traveling to Iraq by land can choose from three border crossings, Shalamcheh, Chazzabeh and Mehran.

Arbaeen falls on October 30 this year.
