A Quran competition for students of religious schools began in Senegal on Friday, April 19.
The city of Thies is hosting the event on the occasion of national day of seminary students, Setal website reported.
1200 students of Quranic sciences are competing in the two-day event in the category of Quran recitation.
10 contestants will be selected as top winners and awarded at the closing ceremony after the competition ends on Saturday.
Secretary of Senegal’s National Society of Quran Schools said the contest is an opportunity for the students to learn the Quran more and a venue for spreading the Holy Book’s teachings.
He further urged the government officials to set up a national institution to be in charge of running the affairs of the country’s Dar-ol-Quran centers.
He said the institutions can help to resolve the current problems in Senegal’s Quranic schools.
Islam is the predominant religion in Senegal where 94 percent of the population is estimated to be Muslim.
